There was a new venue for Saturday’s East District Cross Country Championships with Piperdam Leisure Resort near Dundee the destination for the 16 PH athletes who took part. The course was an undulating 2.8km around the golf course taking in a couple of bunkers but fortunately no water traps. This year both the male and female senior races were over three laps with our under 17s running two.
The juniors were first up with Andrew Thomson edging Jamie Lessels by just five seconds to finish 22nd, and one place ahead of his teammate, in 21:34. Aaron Bennet completed the team of three to secure fourth position for his team.
In the ladies race Kristin Lownie was the top performer for the club, finishing in an excellent 18th position in 35:39. Julie Menzies enjoyed a lead over Alison McGill after the first lap but this was pulled back with McGill eventually prevailing in 37:15, three seconds ahead of Menzies.
It was the turn of Andrew Davis to lead home the men’s team with a terrific time of 31:44 for the 8.6km course. Hot on his heels was Robert Sellar who finished in 34:46 with Mike McConnell a further few seconds back.
Fourth counter was Paul Kieran who also combined with Davis and Sellar to put the PH Racing Club masters team in fourth position. Ewan Taylor, in his first race since his superb run at the Loch Ness Marathon, and the improving Phil Waring made up the final two spaces in scoring team of six which finished in 10th position overall.
Well done to all PH athletes who took part and thanks hosts Dundee Hawkhill Harriers. Thanks also to Pete Bracegirdle and Ross Bennet for the excellent race photos.
