The last weekend before the Cross Country season commences was highly successful for PH Racing Club with numerous outstanding performances around the country.

The action kicked off in the early hours of Saturday morning with a six strong PH team out to defend their title at the Fife Coastal Relay which covers 116.5 miles over 6 stages from Kincardine to Newburgh. Martin Butcher, Willie Rennie, Alison McGill, Wright Beveridge, Johnny Cassells and Arron Leitch all ran superbly and after a highly competitive battle throughout came home in 2nd position in 14 hours and 54 minutes, finishing only a few minutes behind Dundee Hawkhill Harriers.

The 18th edition of the Loch Ness Marathon took place on Sunday with the in form Ewan Taylor and Graeme Doig among the 3581 contesting this point to point 26.2 miler. Despite a headwind, they both ran incredibly strong races with Ewan placing an excellent 7th overall in a new personal best of 2.43.29 while Graeme Doig clocked a highly impressive 2.46.00 in 12th position and first Male 40.

Closer to home, a small contingent of PH athletes took part in the Giffordtown 5K Road Race. The severe flooding on areas of the course didn’t dampen the performances with many podium finishes and personal bests recorded. Paul Kieran maintained his good form with a 2nd place finish covering the out and back course in a quick 16.26 which was only three seconds adrift of race winner, Craig Morris (Fife AC). Our under 17 year old athletes were also to the fore with Andrew Thomson setting a new best of 16.54 in 8th position while Jamie Lessels reached the finish in 17.14 in 11th place.

The next PH athlete to cross the line was Iain Taylor who won the Male 50 award in 18.31 with fast improving Michael Lindsay clocking a PB of 18.56. Kristin Lownie was at the fore of the ladies race, clocking an excellent 18.58 to place 2nd lady, only 29 seconds behind the host club’s Laura Gibson who secured top spot. Aaron Bennet ran a cracking race to break 20 minutes for the first time, timing at 19.53 and Allen Marr placed 3rd M60 in 21.54.

Well done to all and thanks to the race organisers for the Coastal Relay photos and to Pete Bracegirdle for those from Giffordtown. Next weekend the club focus turns to cross country with the East District Relays taking place in Livingston and several PH teams entered.
