It has been a busy weekend so far for PH Racing Club athletes with a number of successes to report over distances ranging all the way from 2 miles up to 53 miles.
Friday night saw the first race of the new re-vamped Fife AC Kirkcaldy Wizards Summer Series, a 2 miler at Ravenscraig Park. Andrew Thomson was the leading runner for PH finishing in 5th place overall, and 3rd in the very strong junior category, in an excellent time of 11:07 to set a junior club record. Also setting records were Gordon Lawson, 11:36 in the V40 category, and Robyn Morrocco who set a women’s mark of 12:51. Graham McInnes finished in 11:58 in 12th position while our other junior member Aaron Bennet timed at 13:04. Ed Norton and Allen Marr occupied 2nd and 3rd positions in the V60 category with times of 13:05 and 13:26 respectively.
There was an early start on Saturday for Andy Jannetta and Arron Leitch to take on the Highland Fling 53 Mile Ultra which this year incorporated the Scottish Ultra Trail Championships. The route takes in the southern half of the West Highland Way and is 90% off road, including some tough climbs. With both having completed the race for the first time last year they were looking to better their debut performances and Jannetta certainly did that, improving his position at each checkpoint to eventually finish in 8:59:45 in 34thposition. This marked a gain of over half an hour on last year and bodes well for June’s full West Highland Way Race. Leitch also took over 30 minutes off his 2018 time, completing the course in 10:16:35.
Meanwhile, another two PH athletes travelled north to take part in the Run Balmoral Festival. First up, in the morning’s 5k race, was Jonathan Peebles who put in a superb performance, mixing it with a quality field, to finish in 5th position in a time of 16:06 and take a massive chunk off his previous personal best. In the afternoon 10k, Julie Menzies also ran well to finish as 4th female and win the V40 prize with a time of 42:57.
On Saturday afternoon, coach Ben Hukins, on a rare outing in his PH vest, took overall 1st place at the Norman’s Law Hill Race from Luthrie in North Fife. Hukins, with a winning time of 30:50, was joined by fellow-members Alison McGill and Robyn Morrocco, with the former finishing 2nd female in 37:51.
Well done to all and thanks to Wullie Law and Ross Bennet for the Ravenscraig photos. Good luck to all the PH athletes taking part in tomorrow’s London and Stirling Marathons which we look forward to reporting on!
