There were 13 PH vests on show at the recent Giffordtown 5k which is always a fast race over an out and back course on quiet roads. Fastest for PH was Jamie Lessels, almost back to his best in 10th position in 16:50. Mark Ryan also continued his good form, following up his 4th place at the previous weekend’s Dalgety Bay 10k, where he finished just behind 3rd placed club mate Paul Kieran, with 13th here. His time of 17:18 at Giffordtown put him just ahead of Aaron Bennet who clocked 17:26. It was good to see Stuart Meiklejohn (main photo) in his first proper race for PH and he dipped under 18 minutes, timing at 17:56.
Fastest female for PH was Kristin Lownie who posted a time of 18:35, with Julie Menzies timing at 19:12, Louise Lessels 20:57 and Susan Allan recording a personal best of 23:42. John Crookston is another member who seems to be returning to some of his best form after injury and he also put in an excellent run of 18:57 to finish 2nd V60, just behind Commonwealth Games veteran Paul Forbes. Mark Webster split the V60 pair in 18:54. Ed Norton went one place better in the V70 category where he also equalled the course record of 20:46 held by George Black and just ahead of him was Wullie Haldane who was also making a racing comeback and timed at 20:28.
With so many other races like this back on there have been less PH members taking part in the Blast race series in Edinburgh but Gary Pirie has made the journey over to the Tuesday lunchtime race in the Meadows for the last couple of weeks, coming second in 18:20 and then improving the following week to record a time of 18:09 and finish first.
At the other end of the distance scale, Paul Hammond recently ran the Moray Way 100 mile race which included some very tricky terrain and a lot of running in darkness in what was a giant looped course beginning and ending in Forres. Hammond’s reward for his efforts was a top 10 finish, timing at 22:13:42 in 9th position.
Well done to all and thanks to Giffordtown 5k organisers Fife AC and to Gordon Donnachie for another set of excellent race photos.
