Three PH athletes made the trip to East Lothian to take part in the first meeting of the 4J Studios National Open Series at Meadowmill on Saturday. With most races cancelled this year, including the national track championships, these meetings organised by Scottish Athletics were the first opportunity to race for most in Scotland and places were snapped up quickly.

As Covid-19 restrictions are not due to be further eased until Monday the races took an unusual format with just two or three athletes lining up in each heat, and the races run entirely in lanes. The only member of the PH trio with a recent 800m time to be used for seeding was Allen Marr so he was first onto the track and ran out the winner of his heat in an excellent time of 2:31.30.

Andrew Thomson and Scott Love were unseeded in the final 800m heat of the day where Thomson ran out a clear winner in a time of 2:16.10. Love finished in 2:28.00 with Daniel Scroop of Garscube Harriers separating the PH duo.

Marr will be looking to better his time at next week’s event, which will hopefully be able to go ahead in a more familiar format, while Thomson will be back to the hills to run the Salisbury Crags Junior Race put on by Hunters Bog Trotters.

Thank you to the organisers and officials from Scottish Athletics who had clearly gone to extraordinary lengths to ensure that racing could resume, and to Karen Thomson for the race photographs.
