PH Racing Club had a fine start to the East District Cross Country League at the weekend, with the first meeting taking place at Beveridge Park, Kirkcaldy. We have previously won both the men’s and women’s masters titles and are once again looking to finish as high up the league as possible.

In the women’s race it was no surprise to see Julie Menzies leading us home with a great run of 23:12 for the two lap race, and finishing as 7th masters runner, ahead of Clare Graham. Unfortunately, it was only the two PH ladies there so not a complete team of four, or masters team of three, but we still placed 17th overall and 9th masters team after the first race. We are always on the look out for more female members to bolster our women’s team so please get in touch if you fancy giving it a shot!

Then in the men’s three lap race of approx five miles, there was a great battle between the top three counters who were all close together. Ben Hukins finished first for the club and 7th masters athlete in 29:47, not far ahead of Andrew Wright and Andy Davis who were 8th and 9th masters respectively. Andrew ran 30:04, only six days after the Frankfurt Marathon, and Andy Davis was only a few seconds back in 30:12.

They were also the first three counters in the overall league, with Aaron Bennet, Scott Love and Mark McLean the other three counters there. Triple Path of Condie Champion Colin Somerville, made his first race appearance in almost three years which was brilliant to see, and well done to Jamie Strachan who ran his first XC race with a good solid run of just over 37 minutes.

The men are sitting in 9th place overall in the league after the first race and 2nd in the masters competition, not far behind leaders Metro Aberdeen. Hopefully we will have another good turnout for the second race in Dundee on 22nd November.

On Sunday, Dave Morton had the chance to run along with the great man Eliud Kipchoge in the New York City Marathon and he made the most of the experience, finishing in 4:42:40. Nice one Dave – four majors down and two, sorry three (and counting) to go.

Thanks to Kenneth Sutherland and Ross Bennet for the Kirkcaldy race photos used here.
