Over the first two weekends in February there have been a number of fantastic performances by our masters athletes who have again collected national medals, both on the indoor track and in cross country.

Last weekend Alistair Radbourne ran five races in a day, and picked up a trio of sprint medals. Competing for the first time in the 60m, he won V55 silver in a time of 8.57 seconds. In the 200m he ran 28.03 to qualify for the final where he bettered this with 27.59 for V55 bronze. The 400m also had a prelim round to negotiate, which Alistair duly did, before running the exact same time of 63.52 in the final to collect another V55 bronze.

We also had two representatives in the 1500m where Paul Kieran won his first national medal as a V50 with a run of 4:34.20 for bronze. Not far behind was Roger Clark who timed at 4:40.46. This Sunday, Paul was back at the Emirates Arena, this time competing over 3000m, and went one better with V50 silver in 9:41.00.

Between these indoor meets came Saturday’s National Masters Cross Country Championships at Camperdown Park, Dundee. First up was the 6 kilometre race for women and men over 65. Julie Menzies finished 15th overall in 27:01 to win V50 silver, while Malcolm Hammond timed at 31:05 and took home V70 silver. Gillian Wallace and Clare Graham also had good runs.

In the 8 kilometre men’s race, Paul Kieran warmed up for Sunday’s indoor race by coming 5th V50 in 29:35. Mark Webster (31:40) and Robert Sellar (33:01) completed the V50-64 team that was initially awarded team bronze, but unfortunately later updated to 4th after some re-calculations! Iain Wallace and Mark Western were the other two PH male competitors, both registering the same time of 34:18.

Back on the roads, Bryan Innes took on the undulating new course of the Neil McCover Half Marathon in Kirkintilloch, finishing 12th in 1:22:05.

Well done to all and thanks to Bobby Gavin/That One Moment for the indoor race photo.
