PH Racing Club’s Ed Norton powered to another national medal at Sunday’s Blast Running Scottish Mile on Silverknowes Prom in Edinburgh. This event played host to the British Masters 1 Mile Championship and Norton came out on top in the V70 category with a superb time of 5:33. This was a new personal best and places Ed top of the all time UK rankings for a road mile in his age category.

There was also another medal for Julie Menzies, in the V50 category, timing at 5:35, to win a British Masters bronze to add to the silver she won in the British Masters 10k a few weeks ago. Huge congratulations to Ed and Julie on these latest achievements.
Last Friday was the hugely popular Black Rock ‘5’ race at Kinghorn. For those unfamiliar with the race it is an unusual one, starting on the road before hitting the beach, out and round the Black Rock (usually resulting in wet feet) and back. Despite the name, the race is usually closer to 4.4 miles in distance. This year the race was also a counter in the PH Racing Club Championships so there was an extra incentive for our members to take part, with 19 doing so on the night.
First home for PH was Ben Hukins who covered the course in 26:11 to collect 50 championship points. Not far behind was Aaron Bennet who still leads the way in the championship after timing at 26:18. Mark Ryan was third PH in 27:24. In the ladies race the first PH finisher was Sarah Paterson in 32:07.
Mark Ryan has been busy with his racing over the last couple of weeks, bagging a double of race victories in two days at the end of May. On Tuesday 23rd he placed first at the Blast 5k at the Meadows in Edinburgh, clocking 17:03. The next night, he followed this up by coming out on top at the Formonthills Trail Race, where Julie Menzies was first female and also third overall.
The main event at the end of May is of course the Edinburgh Marathon Festival with both the half marathon and marathon taking place on the Sunday. First up was the half with Bryan Innes top PH runner in a new PB time of 1:18:49. Michael Lindsay also kept up his recent form with a new best of 1:25:40 and Derek Cosgrove completed a hat trick of PBs for our entrants.
In the full marathon Graeme Doig finished 20th overall in 2:39:17 to complete yet another London/Edinburgh double. If you see him doing this again you have his permission to… Yeah, whatever Graeme, see you again next year. Kristin Lownie ran her first marathon for a few years and knocked about 25 minutes off the club V40 record with her time of 3:11:10.

We have had a few other prize winners recently. Judy Turner took home the V50 prize for both the Dumyat and Kinnoull Hill Races. Then at the Dunblane 12k there were category wins for Ian Stewart (V60, 49:39) and Malcolm Hammond (V70, 55:00).
Well done to all and thanks to the various race organisers and photographers.
